"Pistol" Pete Maravich was the stuff of legend from the time he burst on the basketball scene at LSU under his father & coach Press Maravich where he scored a still NCAA record 3,667 points without such modern conveniences as the shot clock or three point line. He would carry over his virtuosic style to the NBA with 5 All Star Appearances and a scoring title, though injuries would bring his career to a premature end. Offered in this lot is a jersey dating to the era encompassing his final All Star seasons, with the full findings of the MEARS evaluation as follows...

Style: Shirt is the purple mesh body shell pull over shirt with green/yellow ribbed arm and neck opening. Straight Cut tail. “JAZZ” and player number “7” applied with white applique. “MARAVICH” appears on reverse in single tackle twill block lettering sewing directly on back of shirt. Style of shirt compares favorably to period images.

Manufacturer/Dating: The style of the Medalist Sand Knit tag was manufactured during the 1975-1977. Therefore, the body shell was issued blank to be used by the Jazz during the 1975-1977 season. Prior to 1977, Maravich’s shirt was found with “Pistol” on the reverse. Period images show that during the 1977 season his shirts were issued with “MARAVICH”. Therefore, we date this shirt to the 1977-1979 era.

Game Wear: Shirt shows moderate game wear.

Size 42: Maravich shirts from 1970-1976 were found as size 42. Later Jazz shirts and Celtics were found as size 44. Being a transition shell, the size 42 would be consistent with what Maravich would have worn during the transition.

Final Grade (MEARS A10): Based on the consistencies of manufacturer, style, size, and game wear, examination reveals the previous mentioned areas of evaluation are consistent with what you would expect to find on a 1977-1979 era Jazz game shirt. Therefore, the shirt was awarded the grade MEARS A10. Jersey is also accompanied by letters from the Basketball Hall of Fame and PM&G.
