Collectors often do not realize that before H&B patented the "Powerized" treatment to prevent checking, Hanna already had a treatment they were using that they referred to as Weather Tempered or Tempered. Major league players started to abandon their familiar H&B bats in favor of the superior finished Hanna Bats. Executives realized they were starting to lose market share as word spread about Hanna's superior finish and they set off to invent and perfect the "Powerized" finish. Once perfected, backed by their superior marketing, H&B began to recoup some of their siphoned business back but for a while, Hanna really gave them a run for their money. Hornsby was a well known user of Hanna Bats and the dimensions of this bat are very comparable to documented H&B bats. As for Hornsby, where he went, others followed. And that meant just about everybody in the National League during the second and third decade of the twentieth century as he won batting title after title while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals.
