1923-1924 Vic Aldridge Chicago Cubs Game Worn Road Jersey (MEARS A9)

Vic Aldridge started his major league career with the Cubs just over 100 years ago. By the time he donned this jersey, Aldridge was an established starter in the Chicago rotation. The days of Tinker, Evers, and Chance were long gone, but Aldridge was a consistent and steady workhorse leading the 1924 Cubs staff in games started, complete games, innings pitched, and batters faced. In many ways he was representative of the fans who turned out at Cubs Field (yes, the jersey pre-dates the name Wrigley Field as that did not occur until 1927).

The jersey itself is as solid today as the man who wore it almost a century ago. The top button is missing and the 2nd button from the top has been replaced. On the reverse is what appears to be a vintage 3” x 3” team repair which was done in a manner consistent with team implemented repairs and is noted for accuracy but does not negatively affect the grade.

The lettering of CUBS across the chest is original to the jersey. There is no number on the back since this jersey predates the use of those on Cubs uniforms by almost a decade (1932). The sleeves remain in their original length, and like the collar, are trimmed in their original navy blue soutache. It is rare to find any jersey from this vintage, especially in this current market and the pre-1930’s flannel drought. It is ever rarer to find one where the sleeves have not been rough cut to an above elbow length and in this overall condition. All tagging is original to the garment, which are the Wilson manufacturer’s tag in the collar and the attribution of ALDRIDGE which is done in chain stitch embroidery in the rear tail. Will the Cubs get back to the World Series in the coming months? We’d say their chances are far better than seeing a Cubs jersey of this vintage and condition anytime soon.

With respect to grade, MEARS assigned this shirt the grade of MEARS A9. Minus 1 for missing/replaced buttons.
